In the classical world

Jun 28, 2010 @ 8:27 A.M.

This week the PPP posse camp out in Manchester. We are here to shoot the Icelandic multi-instrumentalist Ólafur Arnalds, our film's main character. Together with conductor André de Ridder and RNCM Symphony Orchestra, he is rehearsing for a show in Bridgewater Hall this Thursday.

For Ólafur, a non-traditional musician not really belonging either to the indie scene or the classical world, this is quite a big deal. Will the songs he has written and recorded more or less alone work in a symphony orchestra setting? And how will the presumably conservative classical audience respond to the works of a mostly self-taught 23-year old?

The rehearsals begin today. Considering yesterday's World Cup action, this meeting between British musicians and a German conductor could be interesting...
