The Legacy of Napster

Starting out working with Press Pause Play, we definitely didn't think our film would be discussing Napster. In fact we decided to avoid the whole debate about illegal filesharing, kids "stealing music" and piracy trials. Even though those topics are an important aspect of the digitalisation of creative works, the enormous focus on them have often stood in the way of other, equally important, changes.
Everybody knows most kids aren't paying for the songs they download. But how are their relationship to music affected when they have access to the whole history of rock? What kind of films do we get when anybody can shoot one? Are auteurs and "lonely geniuses" being replaced by collaborating non-hierarchical collectives? To us, questions like that seemed more exciting than business models and copyright wars.
But during our meetings with musicians, filmmakers and web geeks, there was one thing that the interviewees kept bringing up: the first time they tried Napster. The experience of having almost any piece of music just a click away seem to have been a tipping point for a whole generation.
So the other day we sat there with Napster's Sean Parker. 11 years after he co-founded the revolutionizing music service, this then geeky teenager has become a hotshot web entrepreneur. In his 19th century Manhattan house Sean Parker told us about the turbulent years with Napster and the mix between anger and enthusiasm that it created. He also revealed what he had wanted Napster to become: a legal platform for social networking around music.
Next piece in the Napster puzzle will finds in place this Tuesday. Then we meet one of Sean Parker's old antagonists: Hilary Rosen, former chief executive of RIAA.
