I'm a big fan of Seth Godin, and I've read unleashing the idea virus amongst others. I don't agree that the publishing industry is dead, I just think its position/importance is evolving. It is now part of how you discover new authors rather than the only way. He would not have had an audience of 3000 people on the first day if he wasn't 'Seth Godin' No1 bestseller. There is still a place for currated/edited content.

I agree with Tanya above, there remains a place for publishing, print and editorial discretion; it is the business models that will change. Look at the Harvard Business Press or the Wall Street Journal, both of whom have successful business models that incorporate the best of both worlds.

Love the creative thinking when it comes to the viral nature of ideas and works. The greatest hindrance to most is always going to be making a living at it. I think it's fantastic that anyone can self publish. The bad news is that 99.99% are NOT going to make a living doing it.

The opportunity lies in finding ways to combine publishing, recording, filming, etc for a hobby with actually making money at it so you can continue to fund your creativity.

Sadly I know too many self-published "authors" who mortgaged their home to print their book and are still trying to figure out how they are going to sell enough copies to pay back the loan.

This is not a get rich quick idea but an evolving landscape of media - how it is produced and consumed. To begin with, the content still needs to be remarkable!
